Dragon stone, also known as “Ohko stone,” is another popular rock used in aquascaping, particularly for creating natural-looking landscapes in aquariums. Unlike Seiryu stone, Dragon stone is known for its earthy, brownish color and unique texture that resembles the surface of dragon scales. Here are some key features and details about Dragon stone:

  • Appearance: Dragon stone is characterized by its irregular, craggy surface full of crevices, holes, and layered textures. The stone has a reddish-brown to greenish-brown color, often with a weathered appearance that can add a sense of age and natural beauty to aquascapes. Its porous nature allows mosses and small plants to attach and grow on its surface, enhancing the natural look.
  • Aquascaping Use: It is commonly used in various aquascaping styles, including “Iwagumi” and nature aquariums. Its unique texture and shape make it ideal for creating dramatic, mountainous scenes or simulating rocky riverbeds. Dragon stone works well for creating intricate layouts, allowing aquascapers to build caves, cliffs, and other geological formations in the aquarium.
  • Water Chemistry: Dragon stone is generally inert, meaning it does not significantly alter the water’s pH or hardness. This makes it a suitable choice for aquariums where maintaining stable water parameters is crucial, particularly for fish and plants that require soft, acidic water conditions.
  • Preparation: Dragon stone often comes with clay and debris in its crevices, so it requires thorough cleaning before use. Aquarists typically rinse and scrub the stone to remove loose particles, sometimes soaking it to help remove embedded dirt. This cleaning process ensures that the stone won’t cloud the water or introduce unwanted substances into the aquarium.
  • Placement Tips: When using Dragon stone in an aquascape, it’s common to mix stones of various sizes to create a more natural look. Combining larger stones as the main focal points with smaller ones scattered around can help achieve a balanced and cohesive layout.
